Spring is finally here, and what better way to celebrate then by doing some spring camping with kids?

I love this time of the year when the flowers are braving life above ground, the temperature is getting warmer, and things start feeling a little more cheerful. But, as a parent, I know the mix of excitement and nerves that comes with pitching a tent with little ones in tow. I used to question myself when we first started: “will they enjoy it?,” “will it be too stressful?,” “what if we forget something important?”

In this guide, I’ll dive into everything you need to know about spring family camping for safe, fun, and unforgettable adventures with your kids. From your essential spring camping checklist to creative campsite games, youโ€™ll find practical advice and real-life tips to make your next family outing one to remember.

Spring Camping with Kids: Why Spring is the Perfect Time

For my family, spring camping with kids is the best way to start the season. We don’t tend to do winter camping with our two girls, so spring is the ideal time to get back into it again after finishing our autumn camping trips.

But why do we love it so much?

Family camping in spring means you don’t have to battle the crowds. In fact, most of the campsites we visit at this time of the year are pretty empty. Last year, we visited Langstone Manor Holiday Park, in Tavistock, Devon, and had our pick of pitches. With fewer crowds we could enjoy the quiet, the wildlife, and the space. And our girls loved the kids playground.

Another bonus is that the milder weather means you’re not too hot or too cold in your tent. With less risk of heatstroke or sunburn, spring camping, for us, is less stressful and our girls seem to enjoy it more without overheating in the summer heat.

If you’ve never tried spring camping with kids, it’s a great time to try because it encourages them to enjoy the outdoors earlier in the year. And if you don’t fancy doing it in March when it’s still chilly, there’s always April and May. Plus, there’s so much to see and do: baby animals, wildlife spotting, seeing new flowers, or going on nature walks.

5 Tips for First-Time Family Campers

I remember our first spring camping trip with our girls so well, mainly because of all the little disasters that turned into a memorable adventure. If youโ€™re about to try family camping for the first time, here are five things that help:

  1. Pack with a spring camping checklist:ย I love lists as it helps me pack the things I need without forgetting that all important item. I have them for all our activities: skiing, hiking, camping, and find it helps me a lot. Print out a list and tick off everything, especially theย best camping gear for kids, extra socks, andย waterproof camping gear. Before I used checklists, I once forgot the sleeping mats (before having children) and spent a night on lumpy ground
  2. Choose a family-friendly campsite: Look for places with clean loos, hot showers, and safe play areas. Sites with child-friendly walks or nearby family hiking trails make everything easier for spring family camping
  3. Get the kids involved: Whether youโ€™re camping with toddlers or camping with teenagers, let them help set up the tent or unpack their own bags. It builds excitement and gives them a sense of ownership. My girls love helping set the tent up and unrolling our sleeping bags
  4. Plan for all weather:ย Spring is an unpredictable season. Don’t forget your waterproof camping gear, extra blankets, and a tarp for rainy days. Some of our best memories come from playingย campsite gamesย in the drizzle or making up silly songs as we huddled in our tent
  5. Keep meals simple and familiar: Stick to easy camping recipes. Think, porridge for breakfast, wraps for lunch, and one-pot dinners. And don’t forget the snacks. Hungry kids are grumpy campers, something we all want to avoid

Remember, your first trip wonโ€™t be perfect, and thatโ€™s okay. Camping with kids is about learning together, laughing at mistakes, and building confidence one muddy boot at a time.

Choosing the Best Campsites for Families

Choosing the right spot can make or break your spring camping adventure. Weโ€™ve tried loads, from wild sites in Scotland to bustling parks in Cornwall. For spring family camping, I always look for family-friendly campsites with good facilities: clean loos, hot showers, safe play areas, and good reviews are just a few of the things I look for.

Booking early is key for spring holiday camping or Easter camping trips. Weโ€™ve missed out before by leaving it too late. If youโ€™re after something quieter, try midweek stays as you might find fewer crowds and more chance to get a better pitch.

And don’t forget to see if the site has a shop for forgotten essentials.

Fun Spring Activities and Games for Kids

One of the best parts of spring camping with kids is all the fun you can have outdoors, rain or shine. My girls love exploring and getting dirty on our walks, and it’s great seeing them having so much fun outside.

Over the years, weโ€™ve tried plenty of activities, and these are always a hit for spring family camping:

  • Nature scavenger hunt: Create a list of spring items (bluebells, feathers, pinecones, ladybirds) and see who can find them all first
  • Campsite games: Classic tag, hide-and-seek, rounders, or even a simple game of catch
  • Outdoor crafts: Collect leaves, sticks, or stones and make nature art or leaf crowns
  • Family hiking trails: Pick a child-friendly walk and bring binoculars for wildlife spotting
  • Rainy day den building:ย Use tarps or blankets to create cosy dens when the weather turns (we love doing this)
  • Camping meal ideas:ย Get the kids involved in making marshmallow sandwiches, banana boats, or sโ€™mores
  • Easy camping recipes: Let them help prep snacks, like fruit kebabs or flapjacks
  • Wildlife spotting:ย Early mornings are perfect for watching birds or even deer if youโ€™re lucky
  • Campsite games at night: Flashlight tag, shadow puppets, or stargazing wrapped in sleeping bags for kids

These are a few of our favourite activities we like doing, but often some of our best memories from spring camping with kids come from spontaneous games or just making up silly rules as we go. We don’t try to be too rigid when we’re camping as itโ€™s all about enjoying the outdoors together.

Meal Planning and Easy Recipes for Spring Camping

Meal times on a spring camping trip can be fun, as long as you keep things simple and get everyone involved. I used to panic about what to cook, especially if there weren’t any food places near where we were camping. Now, I stick to a few tried-and-true favourites that work for us.

Here are some of our go-to, hassle-free camping meals:

Breakfast:

  • Porridge with dried fruit and honey
  • Bacon or veggie sausage baps, just fry up on the camp stove
  • Pancakes cooked on a griddle, topped with bananas or chocolate spread
  • Yogurt with granola and berries. Don’t forget your cool box

Lunch:

  • Wraps with ham, cheese, and salad. My girls love building their own
  • Pasta salad with chopped veggies and a simple dressing
  • Crackers, cheese, and apple slices, which are great for a quick snack

Dinner:

  • One-pot veggie chilli (make this at home and reheat at the campsite to save on time)
  • Chicken or veggie kebabs cooked over the barbecue
  • Jacket potatoes wrapped in foil and cooked in the campfire
  • Tinned soup with crusty bread for a no-fuss warm meal
  • Rice and beans for something filling and quick to make

Donโ€™t forget to pack plenty of camping snacks for your kids like flapjacks, fruit, and oat bars to keep everyone going between meals.
